Never read a single book by Laxness before I visited this museum. After walking around the house with the recorded guide, I ended up buying four books. Wonderful house, and a very interesting author. The people working there were very helpful, especially the one working at the reception, who gave us great advice on which books to buy. She was very knowledgeable, she had even done her bachelor thesis on Laxness

A treat both visually & audibly! The audio tour was concise and well explained about his life. Mr Laxness was already a man full of great taste ahead of his time..till now the house stand modern to what is today. Well maintained as well. His work is remarkable and making great friends in the creative area which enables him to acquire lots of great artwork displayed in his homes gifted by his peers. And the view from all the windows were amazing! Tantalising for the eyes indeed. The friendly lady guides over there were so helpful to explain more. Definitely making this tour with a personal touch! Just come and see for yourself.

A superb place to visit, about Halldór Laxsness the National Nobel Prize of Iceland. A great writer and culture ambassador of the country. At the entrance you are introduced with a small movie, and then an easy audio guide for the visit inside his house. All the employee are very kind, the place is quiet and the surrounding and garden are wonderful. Absolutely worth a visit.

This was a bit of a pilgrimage for me… Halldór Laxness— despite being a Nobel-prize winning author— is still such an under-appreciated writer in the USA. But he is on my personal Mt. Rushmore of all-time favorite writers (with Tolstoy, Ian McEwan, and Lauren Groff).
I made my family (wife and 2 boys, 10 and 12) take a little detour to go here.
They were annoyed at first, but they ended up enjoying the audio tour of the house. It was the perfect duration, about 20-25 minutes. They enjoyed learning about Laxness himself and about Icelandic life. The guide was friendly and helpful.
If you have read any of Laxness’s books, you must go. If you haven’t, you should go and learn about him and buy a copy of Independent People while you are there.

For anyone interested in great literature, Haldor Laxness is Iceland’s sole Nobel laureate, for literature in 1955, and particularly on the strength of his brilliant novel 'independent People'. His home is preserved exactly as he enjoyed it. There’s an excellent audio guide to shepherd you through the house. A wonderful experience!
